Madison is not used to losing at raquetball, or at anything else for that matter, but she has begun to notice she is becoming more and more clumsy. By the time the day arrives when she loses the raquet-ball match to her best friend Paul, she knows her deepest fear is coming true. Like her brother, Malcolm, she is going blind.

Paul knows a good thing when he sees it, and his friendship with Maddie is a good thing, until he begins to fall in love with her, until she tells him she is going blind.

Paul and Maddie fumble through their relationship with each other and with God. Maddie's anger at her mother and at God for allowing her blindness, are realistic and heart-wrenching as she struggles to deal with the debilitating illness.

Beyond the Night is a book you can't put down. Its plot has twists and turns that lead you into the unknown, just as the main characters face the unknown in their lives. The ending will make you catch your breath.
